Library seeks VITA tax prep volunteers

Smiling volunteers enjoy a pizza meal around a long table at a restaurant.

Looking for a way to help the Newton community in 2023? Volunteering with Newton Public Library’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a great opportunity.

The VITA program helps seniors and people with low-to-moderate incomes to file their taxes for free. Volunteers work one-on-one with taxpayers to gather the needed financial information and complete the filing process. In 2022, VITA volunteers assisted nearly 400 area taxpayers.

Past tax experience is not required. New volunteers will take a free online training course offered by the IRS, and will work with experienced volunteers to learn the ropes.

Volunteer roles include conducting initial interviews with taxpayers to make sure they have needed materials; using TaxSlayer computer software to prepare tax returns; and reviewing tax returns prepared by other volunteers to check for accuracy.

Tax season at Newton Public Library begins on Feb. 6, 2023, and concludes on April 8. Hours and time commitments are flexible. For more information about volunteering, email Larry Lee, llee1225@yahoo.com, or call the library, 316-283-2890.
